vagabond soul

i was working away one evening
with a throbbing head
these three beige walls, decayed and small
i think i’m nearly dead
then the epiphany hit me
i envisioned my dismal fate
so i got off my lazy ass
and walked out of that place
i took all my worthless possessions
and sold them online
i bought a one-way ticket
i will not return this time
wherever i was heading
i knew i’d be alright
the life i had been longing for
was finally in my sight
but then reality slapped me
i woke up with drool down my face
my boss, raising his iron fist
put me in my place

we saw the colour
in the black and white film
we saw this supernova
standing still
we saw the sunshine
in the black of night
ohh-oh-oh-ohhhh, what a sight
we never felt alone
in the depths of space
we could still see the words
after they’d been erased
a thousand miles in land and we’d still
see the ocean shore
but i can’t see it anymore
had quite the run there, didn’t we?
we made some awesome memories
but i don’t see many more coming our way
that’s why i’m leaving you today

they say it’s okay, since they work a lot
and thanks to them, we got such fine jobs
they’re pretty great and so nice ‘cause they give to charity!
said all them folks at 1209 north orange street
so great to see all them so happy
buying yachts and private jets by saving their money
for once democrats are working with the g.o.p.
they’re all merry and free on 1209 north orange street
wouldn’t it be nice to be right on that road
i could get a bit more cash to pay my student loans
maybe i could pay my rent get something good to eat
but i can’t unlock the doors at 1209 north orange street
did i hear correctly that you want in as well?
just like us, down on your luck and maybe if they’d help
social spending might just work and help us when in need
so let’s go find these folks on 1209 north orange street

this man dug a hole
laid down his soul
in the form of a seed
in his sweaty shirt
covered it with dirt
to grow into a beautiful tree
he built himself a home
watched his family grow
thinking back, he teared up and smiled
40 years now gone
his family all moved on
but there it stands, his deciduous child
he gave everything
to see that black oak spring
into what it grew to be today
once the queen of trees
now a pile of leaves
toppled by a bulldozer, it lay
a lifetime of growth
down in seconds at most
funny how fast life can turn around
they handed him his pay
and nudged him on his way
the only one to hear the sound
as his tree fell to the ground

you and i just cannot be
you and me

you and i just cannot be
like potheads and conservatives

like those who waltz and those who twerk
like kanye west and socrates
like my dad and technology
you and i just would not work
you and i
like sunny days and stormy nights
you and i just cannot be
you and me
like ragweed and allergies
you and i just cannot be
like the urban and the rural
like racists in the modern world
